The Racial & Ethnic Diversity Initiative at SPU

Summary of Diversity Progress and Needs

From the June 2003 Assessment Annual Reports

Department

Diversity Progress

Resources Needed

Art

(Michael Caldwell)

While they didn't hire a woman for that sake alone, she has provided a strong role model for women artists.

No other diversity activities have been done.

Only beginning to explore the issue of diversity, so not sure on resources. They are discussing linking a series of gallery shows with guest lectures to explore diversity in art.

Biology

(Rick Ridgeway)

While they would like to see diversity incorporated in the curriculum and the school, they have only made minor changes to the curriculum. They have discussed it in departmental meetings, but no changes have made it into the curriculum.

They hired a Caucasian female in a visiting appointment, but ethnicity wasn't considered when hiring her. One Hispanic applicant indicated she would like to adjunct for SPU and she may be called on in the future. (Her specialty didn't match the position they needed).

No departmental effort has been made for co-curricular activities, but Drs. Fitch, Moore & Nelson have done individual things.

The current resources may be sufficient, but they are not aware of what they are.

It would be helpful to have a brainstorming session with the department facilitated by an administrator that has an understanding of the diversity initiative and the resources available to the faculty.

Business & Economics, School of

(Jeff Van Duzer & Gary Karns)

“Relatively little”

Faculty had a good discussion with Alex Gee about diversity.

Hired a female faculty member.

Begun assessment of diversity taught in curriculum to determine where to add more.

Offered business consulting and planning to inner city business, but with little response.

Have put a focus on enrolling international students in SBE (especially in the grad prog.), but it may become harder due to Visa issues.

  • Release time for course development.
  • Retain Alex Gee's as a consultant.
  • Greater support (and less resistance) to SBE's attempt to build their study abroad programs.

Communication & Journalism

(Debra L. Sequeira)

2 of 5 faculty members are mentors for the Ames Scholars.

Diversity is taught in all journalism, interpersonal, and rhetoric course, but is particularly focused on in Cultural Com. & Ethical Com.

When they have the option to hire more faculty, they will focus on diverse avenues (i.e. Advertise in Black Issues in Higher Ed ) .

Communications does its best to educate students in ethnical and gender diversity, but it needs to a university wide issue, not just a few departments. Speakers who are experts in reconciliation would be helpful.

Computer Science

(Mike Tindall)

Due to the nature of CSC, it is not affected by diversity issues, although the workforce in this area is very diverse.

More than half of the faculty they interviewed were non-Caucasian, but it was a Caucasian that accepted their offer. Race had no effect on their decision

Current resources are sufficient.

Education, School of

(Bill Rowley)

Diversity Committee meets monthly to discuss increasing diversity in SOE.

Creating a welcoming atmosphere is one of 5 strategic goals.

Started a poster project of various people in high positions to hang in Peterson.

Hired Prof. from Zimbabwe.

Hired Asian American Staff.

Sent two faculty to Washington Assoc. of Black School Educators conference.

Over 60 of Ed students attended seminar on teaching African American children.

25% tuition discount for graduate students of color. SOE makes up the difference.

May faculty meeting was dedicated to diversity initiative and placing diversity statement in syllabi.

Have Video “Race: the power of illusion” for use in multicultural classes.

It would be helpful to work with other departments to see how they are working diversity into their curriculum and programs & share resources.

It would be helpful if the University would provide scholarships for graduate students of color.

Electrical Engineering

(Anthony Donaldson)

Much of the curriculum has diversity built into it – telecommunication infrastructure and alternate energy projects for developing countries.

Second mission trip to Dominican Republic went this summer.

Summer internships in various countries – this year Philippians & Saipan

Numerous courses focusing on diffusion of innovation of other cultures, appropriate technology and global aspects of Engineering.

Hired first sabbatical professor next year from Korea , who will be with us for 2 years

Often have ethnic minority recruits, but find the tuition at SPU prohibitive. Need to learn how to get them hooked up with ethnic (African American) scholarships and how to get information about the scholarships to the students.

English

(Mark Walhout)

David Cho was elevated to Assistant Prof., but is future is uncertain.

David is participating in the discussion of an Ethnic Studies minor, which has been encourage by the department.

Specific information about the expectations of the diversity initiative at the department level would be helpful.

Family & Consumer Sciences

(Barbara Bovy)

Texts are chosen based on how well diversity is made visible and relevant. Also diversity was integrated in case studies throughout FCS.

Did not mention resources for diversity. May have misunderstood question as just repeated an answer to an earlier question.

Health Sciences, School of

(Chris Henshaw)

Dr. Stetz received a faculty grant to explore diversity in nursing curriculum.

Dr. Stetz, in conjunction with the grant, planned a faculty day focused on diversity.

Invited Alex Gee to speak with SHS Faculty twice.

SHS sends students to Costa Rica and has expanded to send students to Honduras as well.

Want to expand this program so more students can go.

Increased support services for students with limited English Proficiency.

Resources and consultants to recruit and retain diverse populations in the nursing program.

Resources and consultants to recruit and retain diverse faculty in the nursing program.

History

(Mike Hamilton)

One of the few African-American faculty at SPU was hired by history in 1999.

Summer pay, course release, or additional faculty lines would be helpful. Then the history faculty could focus on expanding the existing programs of Black History & Women's History Months.

Marriage & Family Therapy

(Claudia Grauf-Grounds)

Three trainings on diversity for clinical practicum students.

Met with consultation teems to review curriculum.

Looking to hire someone who is experienced in diversity issues.

Added a question to course evaluations regarding handling of diversity.

Have a consultant who might help, but don't have the departmental funds for it ($500).

Like funds to offer a signing bonus for any minority new hire.

MA-TESOL & Foreign Lang. & Literature

(Kathryn Bartholomew)

There is nothing more diverse than Foreign Lang. & Lit. for over two decades, their curriculum has included works from many different ethnicities.

The faculty in FLL worship in many different traditions and 3 of the 8 faculty members have immigrated to the US

The ESL field lacks gender balance (mostly taught by women) and people of color and non-native English speakers are also underrepresented.

The faculty are involved in professional groups to help overcome the imbalances.

The faculty address gender balance issues when they hire new faculty.

We do not find current resources for issues surrounding diversity sufficient. We would welcome active, serious recruitment of “diverse” students, and offer our help in that regard. It would also help if “diverse” students were to find a community better prepared to welcome them once they have arrived. We would be happy to help.

Music

(Ramona Holmes)

The music department has approached the diversity initiative through key curriculum and ensemble repertoire choices.

Several classes focus on diversity elements (including a USEM).

Many of the performing groups have played for ‘non-traditional' communities.

For a fully diverse musical repertoire for the performing groups, a 15% increase in the sheet music budget is needed.

The music department hopes to add a gospel choir and is holding a Gospel Fest next year.

Also working with others to bring Dr. Newby & Dr. Boyer to campus.

Philosophy

(Steve Layman)

Have started discussions on diversity in classes.

Have contacted potential woman candidates and encouraged them to apply for open position.

Funding for numerous, generous scholarships so those who attend Community colleges (which is a diverse group) will see SPU as a viable financial option.

Physical Education & Exercise Science

(Dan Tripps)

PEES curriculum includes multicultural experiences/traditions relating to sports and games.

Have hired two African-American adjuncts for the grad. Program in the last year.

Guest presenters/panels regarding gender, race and faith traditions accompany the curriculum.

Comfortable with the level of human resource and financial resources available for diversity.

It would be helpful to have funds and staff to actively recruit, enroll & retain minority students.

Physics

(John Lindberg)

All physics programs graduate mainly white males.

While they want to hire diverse faculty, in the last two searches, none passed the faith and academic screenings.

Have used their limited scholarship money to encourage females to pursue physics, but not sure how successful.

Will look for ways to work diversity into curriculum, but it is mostly set by national standards. Don't know of any other schools that have diversity in programs.

Hard to attract minority faculty, when can't pay as well as other institutions.

Political Science & Geography

(John West)

Due to the nature of political science, issues of diversity are woven into the curriculum. Students study issues of slavery and civil rights for both African Americans and Cherokee Indians. Many of the classes (too numerous to list in a summary) contain diversity elements.

Dept. would like funding to do a conference on the constitutionality of Affirmative action with speakers from both sides.

The university should provide a place where faculty and staff can freely voice their opinions as genuine diversity requires freedom of thought and expression. There was concern about the handling of Dr. Goggans' article.

Psychology, Graduate

(Jay Skidmore)

Syllabi reflect materials that respect & appreciate diversity

Faculty Recruitment targeted ethnic minorities (& hired Japanese American)

Target more ethnic students for admits (20% of admits)

Year-to-year money for:

1 faculty/year to visit minority intuitions

2 faculty/year to join professional orgs committed to ethnic minority issues.

3 journals/year focusing on cultural and ethnic minority issues.

Psychology, Undergraduate

(Micheal Roe)

Efforts made on diversity have been made by the initiative of individual faculty only. The department does not have a systematic plan to enhance diversity. This will be a focus in the coming year.

In the last three hires, though effort was given to advertising in various major out lets in the guild and contact was made with various ethnic professional organizations and colleges, none of the new faculty identifies with an ethnic minority experience.

Psychology as a department does not engage in co-curricular activities that address diversity, though individual faculty members provide such opportunities. Also take part in SPFC activities.

Not aware of resources for diversity, which is troubling. While there is a diversity initiative on paper, it is not a realized university-wide initiative.

OAA/EO should mandate that 50% of courses offered by a department should address diversity in a meaningful way.

OAA/EO should place major time & funding to recruiting diverse faculty & staff for all new openings.

Some ideas: workshops, incentive grants to revise existing courses, release time to develop new courses. However, this would continue the current piecemeal approach.

Sociology

(David Diekema)

The curriculum has not changed since diversity is naturally included in almost all sociology courses.

In terms of hiring, the policy has always been to hire the best person by academic standards and will not be affected by the diversity initiative.

Kevin Neuhouser assisted Mosaic with a film showing & discussion. Bill Lowen does diversity training as part of his consulting work.

Could not think of any resources that would be needed.

Student Life, Office of

(Kathleen Braden)

(No mention of diversity in report)

Theatre

(Andrew Ryder)

Theatre will continue with colorblind casting. However, the audition pool is even less diverse that the SPU campus.

Students are required to attend a variety of performances around Seattle which feature diverse performers and topics not seen in SPU productions.

Invited a guest dancer to perform in the studio theatre.

In order to have a more diverse casts, there needs to be a more diverse student body.

Plan to work with Joe Snell to determine how to best market the open auditions to a more diverse group of students in hopes of having a more diverse cast.

Find a way to attract more students of color to the theatre scholarship program.

Funding for guest artists so can offer more diverse activities on SPU campus.

Theology, School of

(Rick Steele)

Despite efforts to hire diverse faculty for the four open spots, three are Caucasian (1 male, 3 female). SOT needs to evaluate to see if they are doing anything that may be subverting their best intentions.

SOT has discussed the way that marginalizing minority voices can have an effect on people and that it is not ‘modeling a grace filled community.' SOT has committed to discussing this further in coming years.

SOT supports faculty council's decision to have a discussion around Volf's book and to considering ways it might impact SOT.

SOT needs to be an advocate for the university diversity initiative, especially from a theological standpoint, and practice what they preach.

SOT teaches many courses that have diversity as part of the curriculum. Some have existed for some time, other were created or reworked for the diversity initiative.

The issues of resources didn't come up in conversation.
