Ames Scholarship

Meet the Newest Ames Scholars


Since the first group of Ames Scholars arrived at Seattle Pacific University in 2002, 44 students have been offered Ames Scholarships. The first Scholars to graduate became part of the SPU Class of 2005.

 

Below meet the newest Ames Scholars, a group of young leaders who will one day be part of the SPU Class of 2011.

 

Lonnie Alexander - SPU Ames ScholarLonnie Alexander

Garfield High School
Seattle, Wash.

Intended Major:
Physical Education / Theology

What makes Lonnie, Lonnie? “God, my humor, my energy, my friendliness and, of course, my smile,” he says. Lonnie wants to be known as a man who achieves academically, walks with God, and is involved on campus. After graduation, he plans to become a high school teacher, pastor, and community leader.



André (Bhagirath) Bhatt - SPU Ames ScholarBhagirath “André” Bhatt

Emerald Ridge High School
Puyallup, Wash.

Intended Major:
Psychology / Pre-Law

André’s name “Bhagirath” means “king’s kid,” which is derived from King David. He's proud of his namesake and the encouragement he's received to lead. André has traveled in Holland, Costa Rica, and Spain, and he speaks Spanish and Italian. He also enjoys music and poetry, and he plays the piano and clarinet.



Justeene Campo - SPU Ames ScholarJusteene Campo

Mariner High School
Everett, Wash.

Intended Major:
Business

In high school, Justeene was involved in MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), volunteered extensively, and tutored. After leading SPU campus tours for students, Justeene decided to attend SPU. She's now working toward a business degree, while enjoying the Christian community at SPU.




Julissa Castro - SPU Ames ScholarJulissa Castro

Evergreen High School
Seattle, Wash.

Intended Major:
Premed / Biochemistry

Active in New Futures and Upward Bound, Julissa has tutored, volunteered, and earned a leadership scholarship. A U.S.-born Salvadorian, she is now living out one of her dreams. In fact, her determination helped her earn a 3.8 GPA in her first quarter.





Rodelio Doria - SPU Ames ScholarRodelio Doria

Curtis High School
Tacoma, Wash.

Intended Major:
Political Science

Since graduating from a large, diverse high school, Rodelio enjoys sharing his culture with SPU students. He also likes the sense of brotherhood he’s already feeling, and using humor to highlight issues of cultural diversity. Rodelio intends to earn a law degree and become the U.S. president.


Patricia Durias - SPU Ames ScholarPatricia “Pia” Durias

Shorewood High School
Shoreline, Wash.

Intended Major:
Nursing

Pia and her family came to the United States from the Philippines. Her parents encouraged her to pursue excellence, especially in education. Now at SPU, this Ames Scholar is working toward a nursing degree, and is active in SPU clubs. She's also helping her peers learn about her culture. Read more about Pia.


Rosie Martinez - SPU Ames ScholarRosie Martinez

Saint George's High School
Spokane, Wash.

Intended Major:
Chemistry

Rosie celebrates diversity, relies on God, serves the poor, and works hard. She’s participated in camp counseling, mission trips, sports, choir, and leadership. She’s traveled to Vietnam, Korea, Mexico, and Africa. A premed student working on a chemistry degree, Rosie hopes to practice in Africa someday.



Raymond Sugarman - SPU Ames ScholarRaymond Sugarman

San Diego School of International Studies
San Diego, Calif

Intended Major:
Psychology

In high school, Ray was a leader in student government, ROTC, marching band, and sports. But he's proudest the Bible club he began became the largest club at his high school. Today, Ray applies his skills to his psychology major, and he hopes for a career in real estate.
