Ames Scholarship

Dalillah Bernal

Dalillah Bernal, Ames Scholar - Seattle Pacific University

2009 Graduate

Major: Nursing and Latin American Studies

Ames Scholar and 2009 SPU graduate Dalillah Bernal and an emerging team of undergraduates led the expansion in SPU intercultural programs.

Ever in motion, Dalillah strives to be a bridge-builder between individuals and cultures, and works hard to convey the message that diversity goes beyond color. “Students of color are such a small percentage of what diversity looks like,” she says. “There is diversity in politics, class, religion, socioeconomics … When everyone on campus shares their experience, that’s where we’re going to be able to have a connection with one another.”

It was with that in mind that she created the Seattle Pacific Spanish and Latino Student Awareness (S.A.L.S.A.) Club, a Wednesday-night gathering to celebrate and educate about Latino culture. Some of her passions are culturally related, some not.

Being a nursing and Latin American studies double major required plenty of independent study. She was also a member of the SPU Gospel Choir, a teaching volunteer with new immigrant students, and a leader in the SPU chapter of NAMI, the National Association of Mental Illness.

“She has a commitment to social justice and is willing to work toward causes,” says Professor of Nursing Kathy Stetz. “She has a presence about her so people who are vulnerable … feel comfortable around her.”

Dalillah herself believes that nursing in Christian context is an excellent open door to growth in both giver and receiver. “I want to be able to implement spiritual healing into medical treatments,” she says. “I feel God is telling me, ‘You have to be able to grow first.’ We want to perform excellence through our own efforts, but I think we should focus on his presence manifesting that excellence.”
