NOTE: Substantial changes have made to the mathematics
curriculum starting in the Fall of 2008. The
new degree requirements for Computational Mathematics will apply for all
students entering SPU in the Fall of 2008 or later. The degree requirements listed
below are the old requirements which will apply only to students who entered SPU prior to 2008. Courses
listed in red below are being discontinued and replaced with new courses.
If you have any questions about how these changes will affect you, please
contact an advisor in the math department.
B.S. in Computational Mathematics
The bachelor of science degree in
computational mathematics is an interdisciplinary major designed for students
interested in careers involving the applications of mathematics and computer
science. The major
emphasizes applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, and programming. A total of
42 credits in mathematics, 15 credits in physics, and 40 credits in computer
science are required for the major. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained for all
courses in the major.
Admission to the Major
A student interested in majoring in
computational mathematics needs to have a GPA of 2.5 or above in 15 credits of
courses which apply to the major and must submit a
major application
form to a member of the mathematics faculty.

* Starting in the Autumn of 2008, MAT 2375 and 2376 have been replaced by a
single new course, MAT 3360. Students who have not yet completed 2375 and
2376 must take 3360 instead.
Some courses are only offered every other year, so good planning is recommended.
Take a look at the Sample Schedule to see how a
typical computational mathematics major might plan her/his course of study, or
look at the Course Schedule page to see which mathematics courses are offered which years. Consult the Computer Science
Department for further information about the scheduling of CSC courses.
