SEARCH FEATURES FOR SPU
ONLINE DATABASES

Some Universal Search Features

  • Use "Help" link to answer questions about searching the database.
  • Look for applicable subject headings in article records to use as links to more articles on that topic.
  • Can limit retrieval by including various qualifiers (e.g., date range or publication type).
  • Can use "Not" as a connector to exclude words in order to create a more precise search.

New and/or Specialized Search Features

  • CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) periodical index databases1:
    1. Includes links to a few image/full text articles from some EBSCOhost databases.
    2. Can choose to search both Social Services Abstracts and Sociological Abstracts at the same time (choose "Social Sciences" radio button and "Advanced Search" button).
    3. Can search using exact phrases or separating with connectors (e.g., <marital status> and <elderly>).
    4. Includes a link on the summary screen to "Locate Document" and then a link to "Go" to get to "Your Local Library Collection" for holdings information or to "Retrieve Electronic Full Text" that is linked to a few EBSCOhost periodical titles.
    5. Includes search results at the top of the summary screen that list the number of records found for the databases selected (e.g., Social Services Abstracts and Sociological Abstracts).

  • EBSCOhost periodical index databases1:
    1. Includes some image (PDF) / full text (HTML) articles.  Some articles may have a link to JSTOR (journal storage including image articles with a moving wall that excludes most recent 2-5 years).
    2. Can choose to search multiple EBSCOhost periodical databases at the same time by clicking the "Choose Databases" folder on the EBSCOhost database search screen.
    3. Can search using exact phrases or separating with connectors (e.g., <marital status> and <elderly>).
    4. Can limit retrieval in some EBSCOhost databases to "peer reviewed" (scholarly) journals.
    5. Limit your results in ERIC to include "Journal Articles" and to exclude unpublished "Documents".
    6. Includes link in article record to "Check the SPU Catalog" for holdings information.
    7. Includes link in article record to "Request via ILL" if not available in database or at SPU.
       
  • OCLC FirstSearch databases1:
    1. Includes NO image/full text articles.
    2. Can choose to search multiple OCLC databases at the same time, but there may be a loss of some specialized search features.
    3. Use "w" between words in a phrase search to keep words adjacent (e.g., <marital w status> and <elderly>).
    4. Can limit availability on search screen to "Items in my Library".
    5. Includes In your library link on summary screen for periodical titles in paper or microfilm in the SPU library.
    6. Includes link in article record to "Search the catalog at SPU Library" for holdings information.
    7. Includes "ILL" (interlibrary loan) Interlibrary Loan icon in article record to order a photocopy of periodical article.
    8. Can remove blue sidebar menu to save printing space by using print format Detailed Record formatted for printing  icon.
       
  • ProQuest periodical index databases1:
    1. Includes some image/full text articles.
    2. Can choose to search multiple ProQuest periodical databases at the same time by clicking the "Collections" button on the ProQuest database search screen.
    3. Can search using exact phrases or separating with connectors (e.g., <marital status> AND <elderly>).
    4. Can limit retrieval for all ProQuest databases to "Peer reviewed" (scholarly) journals.
    5. Can limit retrieval for all ProQuest databases to "Full text availability only".  This option will not show periodical titles without full text that SPU subscribes to in paper or microfilm.
    6. Includes Local holdings availableicon on summary screen for periodical titles not in image/full text but in paper or microfilm in the SPU library.  Click title link to see holdings information at top of article record.
    7. Includes link in article record to "View Links: Check the SPU Catalog" for holdings information.
