    • Reference Collection – In-library use only (Main Level).
    • General Book Collections (A-J and K-Z) – 28 day check out (Second Floor and Third Floor).
  • Periodicals – In-library use only (Lower Level).
  • SPU Student ID Card – You will need to acquire an SPU student ID card available from University Services (#29 on the SPU campus map) so that the library can check out library materials to you using the library barcode on the back of the SPU student ID card.  See below under "Off Campus Access to Databases & Periodical Indexes" for how the library barcode is used to access databases and periodical indexes from off campus.

Off Campus Access to Databases and Periodical Indexes

  • Off Campus Access – In order to have access from off campus to the databases and periodical indexes (including some image/full text articles), you must log in to verify that you are an authorized user.  When you click on one of the links on the SPU Database web page from off campus, you should see a screen with three boxes asking for:  (1) your name, (2) your library barcode number from the back of your SPU ID card, and (3) your pin (initially set as your birth date MMDDYY).  Your patron information must be loaded in the SPU library catalog in order for you to log in.  Your library barcode number is also available through Banner/Personal Info Menu/Your SPU ID.
  • Technical Support – If you have difficulties logging in, either contact Aileen Maddox (206-281-2420) or call the SPU Reference Desk (206-281-2419) to receive help solving your login problem.

Consortium Access to Materials

  • Summit Borrowing -- obtain books through Orbis Cascade Alliance library consortium within 3 working days. Access through SPU catalog or directly through consortium Summit union catalog.  Borrow only books with Summit Borrowing.
  • Puget Sound – With a current SPU student ID card, graduate students may go to the following libraries and check out materials from them: (1) Northwest College, (2) Pacific Lutheran University, (3) St. Martin’s College, (4) Seattle Public Library, (5) Seattle University, (6) University of Puget Sound, (7) University of Washington, and (8) any of the Orbis Cascade Alliance libraries.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
  • Books or Periodical Articles – Through ILL, SPU students may request information resources not owned by the SPU library and not available through Summit Borrowing.
  • SPU ILL Information and Request Forms – Go to the web page to access SPU ILL information and forms for requesting books and periodical articles.
Photocopy Card
  • Convenience and Savings – You may purchase a photocopy card at the Circulation Desk for $1.00.  This reusable card allows up to $5 to be credited to the card.  Copies made in the  SPU library with the photocopy card cost $0.08 per copy rather than $0.10.
Faculty/Graduate Study Room
  • Study Area – As an SPU graduate student, you are welcome to use the Faculty/Graduate Study Room in the library (Third Floor).
  • Free Locker Space – For your convenience, the Faculty/Graduate Study Room contains free locker space that you may reserve at the Circulation Desk.
  • Laptop Computer Hook-ups – See "Computer Resources" below for access options in the Faculty/Graduate Study Room and other locations in the SPU library.
Computer Resources
  • Access – All of the computers in the SPU library have access to: (1) the SPU Library Catalog and the Summit Catalog (union catalog of the Orbis Cascade Alliance library consortium), (2) online periodical indexes (including some image/full text articles), (3) web resource pages for physical education and exercise science, and (4) general web access.  However, word processing software and other specialized software packages are only available in the library Computer Lab (Lower Level) and, during open times, in the Library Instructional Classroom (Main Level).
  • Online Catalog Computers (Main Level, plus other floors)  – Use these computers when you primarily want to access the holdings and location of:  (1) books, (2) reserve items, (3) videos, and (4) in-house periodical holdings.
  • Database/Index Computers (Main Level)  – Use these computers when you primarily want to access:  (1) online periodical indexes (including some image/full text articles), and (2) other online databases such as WorldCat (union catalog of books from libraries worldwide).
  • Laptop Computer Hook-Ups – Some computer hook-ups in the library have access to the SPU network.  In order to use the SPU network hook-ups, your laptop computer needs an Ethernet card.  In general, you can identify the SPU network hook-up outlets by their label designation on the wall template (e.g., 1HS, 2HS, etc.).  The SPU network hook-ups are located in the following areas of the library:  (1) south end of the Database/Index Computers (Main Level) with cord connections, (2) Faculty/Graduate Study Room (Third Floor), (3) Group Conference Rooms B, C, D, E, and F (Third Floor, north end), and (4) study tables (Third Floor, northwest corner).  There are printed directions at the Reference Desk (Main Level) if you have difficulty configuring your computer to use the laptop computer hook-ups in the library.
  • Wireless -- Wireless access is now available in the library on Second Floor and Third Floor and on the north end of the Lower Level and the Main Level.
  • Computer Lab (Lower Level)  – Use these computers if you primarily want to access general and specialized software applications.
  • Email Computers (Main Level, next to Online Catalog Computers)  – Use these computers if you primarily want to access email.  Weter Hall (#28 on the SPU campus map and next door to the library) also has computers available for email use.
