INFORMATION LITERACY COMPETENCIES

Information Literacy:  Understanding the structure of the information world and applying information-seeking skills successfully.

CONTEXT COMPETENCIES

I. Awareness of the structure of the information world / knowledge industry.

A. Student is aware of legal, socio-political, and economic issues surrounding information and information technology.

B. Student is aware of ethical issues and a Christian perspective surrounding information and information technology (e.g., plagiarism; use policy regarding pornography; etc.).

C. Student understands macro information structures (e.g., how the Web is organized versus a library collection; how papers get published in an academic journal; etc.).

D. Student understands micro information structures (e.g., specific electronic and print sources).

SEARCH PROCESS COMPETENCIES

II. Develop effective search strategies.

A. Student determines the information requirements for the research question, problem, or issue.

B. Student determines what category of information resource is most relevant to the information need and develops a plan to search for needed information.

C. Student monitors the success of  the search and changes strategies appropriately.

III. Locate and retrieve information sources.

A. Student is able to use a variety of information technologies effectively to locate sources.

B. Student correctly interprets bibliographic citations, including Internet and other electronic information.

C. Student knows how to obtain materials, including those not available at SPU (e.g., interlibrary loan; other local library resources; etc.)

IV. Analyze and critically evaluate information.

A. Student analyzes and critically evaluates the results of a search for accuracy, relevance, timeliness, completeness, and authority.

B. Student further assesses information by distinguishing among facts, points of view, and opinion, including the validity of arguments presented.

APPLICATION COMPETENCIES

V. Organize and synthesize information.

A. Student synthesizes information from a variety of sources

B. Student organizes information for practical application.

VI. Use/apply information.

A. Student applies information to critical thinking and problem-solving situations.

B. Student integrates information resources into academic discourse.

C. Student produces and communicates information in effective and appropriate formats.
