PERSONAL RESPONSE SYSTEM™: LIBRARY IMPLEMENTATION*
Jenifer Phelan, Gary Fick, and Bryce Nelson - University Library
Greg Phelan - Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
The grant will be used to purchase and install GTCO Calcomp’s InterWrite
PRS™, Personal Response System in the Library Instructional Classroom
and the Library Seminar Room. The system will then be used for library
information literacy instruction, as well as provide cross campus access
to the PRS technology. Once the librarians are trained to use the PRS,
training will be available to any interested faculty members who would
like to use the Library’s technology enhanced learning spaces. The PSR
system includes a set of handheld clickers and mounted receivers that
are designed to allow students to provide instantaneous feedback to
multiple choice or numeric based questions. Questions can be easily
integrated into new or existing PowerPoint presentations. The data
collected via the PRS can be tabulated and displayed instantaneously
allowing for a more interactive classroom experience for our students.
Rather than simply sitting in their seats and being spoken to, the PRS
allows an instructor to quickly engage the class and determine their
level of understanding. |

* Update: The other academic units on campus that use the clickers will be moving to Qwizdom clickers for the 2006/2007 academic year. Thus the library also chose to go with this brand.

Edvardsen, L. H. (2007). A little technology
goes a long a long way: If you walk into one of Seattle Pacific
University (SPU) Library's information literacy courses, you will find
one of the best examples of what is known as a true "active learning
environment." WesternTrek: The OCLC Western Magazine, 3(4), 8.
