Francis Asbury left England as a volunteer missionary to the
Colonies, spending much of his time in the saddle, often riding
5,000 miles a year to preach. Asbury also gave much needed
leadership to the circuit riders, men responsible for bringing the
Gospel to frontier towns. Although ordered by Wesley to return
to England during the Revolutionary War, Asbury stayed on,
eventually founding and becoming the first bishop of the Methodist
Church of the United States. |
