Here is a list of possible uses for an online component in a face-to-face course.
- Document Repository
Documents typically distributed in class (i.e. lecture notes, handouts, supplementary readings) may be placed online. Also, links to relevant Internet resources can be made easily.
- Electronic Assignment Collection and Scoring
Students may submit their assignments digitally. An instructor would then see student submissions automatically appear in the course gradebook as needing to be assessed.
- Online Quizzes or Surveys
Checks for understanding can be assigned to be completed before or after class discussions.
- Online Gradebook
Students can check their grades without asking the instructor. A student will see his/her individual grades along with a class mean for each assessment.
- Communication
Instructors can email an entire class or individual students within a course.
- Synchronous and Asynchronous Discussion
Instructors can facilitate synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous discussions with students. Possible uses include: - Office hours
- Assignment clarification
- Content reflection
- Sharing papers or projects
- Knowledge construction
- Frequently asked questions (reduce individual email)
- Introductions
- Socialization
