Editing Digital Video Using Apple iMovie


Capturing Video Footage | Splitting Video Clips | Cropping Video Clips

Capturing Video Footage
1) Insert Tape into VCR
2) Make sure Canopus ADVC-100 DV converter is set to “Analog In”. If you are using the JVC MiniDV/SVHS deck make sure that the appropriate deck is selected.
3) Open iMovie.

4) On the top toolbar, click File > New Project.

5) Name your project.

6) Locate toggle between “Camera” (small camera) and “Edit” (picture of scissors)

7) Locate clip you wish to include in your finished movie.
8) Queue tape to a little before the clip you wish to use.
9) Click “Import” (located with play controls).

10) Click “Stop” after your clip is finished.
11) If your clip is more than 9 minutes, iMovie will continue capturing your footage, but in a second clip. Don’t worry, you can combine the two clips in the timeline later.
12) Repeat steps 8-11 until you have captured all the clips you think you will use in your project.

Splitting Video Clips
1)If you have one clip that has two parts you wish to place in different places
in your finished move, you can split the clip into two separate clips.
2) Select the clip you wish to edit by clicking on it.
3) Find the approximate point you wish to split the clip on the scrubber bar (blue bar under iMovie monitor which displays the timeline of video) by dragging the playhead with the mouse.

4) Use the right and left arrow keys to find the precise point you wish to split the movie by moving the playhead (the arrow used to inticate where you are in the movie) through the movie frame by frame.
5) On the top toolbar, click Edit > Split Video at Playhead.

6) Repeat steps 2-5 until all the clips you wished to split have been split.

Cropping Video Clips
1) Now that you have a bunch of clips, you need to get rid of the unwanted
footage that’s either at the beginning, end, or middle of your clip.
2) Select the clip you wish to edit by clicking on it.
3) Find the beginning of the unwanted footage in the scrubber bar (blue bar under iMovie monitor which displays the timeline of video).

4) Click and drag below scrubber bar.
5) Two triangular crop markers will appear.

6) Drag them until the first one is at the beginning of the unwanted footage and the second one is at the end.

7) To increase or decrease the edited area frame by frame, click on the marker you want to move, and use the right or left arrow key to make precise changes.
8) On the top toolbar, click Edit > Clear.

9) The area between the crop markers will be removed.
10) Repeat steps 2-9 until all your clips are trimmed.

Adding Video Clips to the Timeline
1)Now that you have all your clips trimmed, you’re ready to arrange them in the order you want them viewed in.
2) Simply drag the clips down to the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

3)Order them in the order you wish them to be viewed by dragging them within
the timeline to the correct position.

Adding Titles
1) Your video is almost done! If you want, you can add titles to enhance your video.
2) To add titling, choose “Titles” in the bar below the video bin.

3) Select the type of title you want (as you select each one, a small preview of what it will look like will appear).

4) Edit the title so it says what you want.
5) Drag the title down to the place in the timeline you want it to appear.

6) Repeat steps 3-5 until you have no more places you want to add titles.

Adding Transitions – Done After Effects
1) Your video is almost done! If you want, you can add transitions to enhance your video.
2) To add a transition, choose “Transitions” in the bar below the video bin.

3) Select the type of transition you want.

4) Drag the transition down to the place in the timeline you want it to appear.

5) Adjust the length, etc. of the transition if you desire.

6) Repeat steps 8-10 until you have no more places you want to add transitions.

Adding Music/Sounds
1) Your Video is almost done! If you want, you can add music or sound effects to enhance your video.
2) To add music from a CD, choose “Audio” in the bar below the video bin.

3) Insert a CD into the CD-ROM drive. A list of tracks will appear.
4) Locate the track you wish to include in your movie.
5) In the video timeline, move the playhead to the point in your movie that you want the music to begin playing.
6) You can move the playhead frame by frame using the left and right arrow keys.
7) Select the audio track you want to add, then click “Record Music”.
8) Click “Stop” when you want to stop recording.
9) You can now move, crop, or remove the audio track in the same way you’ve edited the video track.

Exporting Your Video
1) Once your video is fully edited, you need to export it from iMovie to the format you wish for it to be viewed in.
2) On the top toolbar, click File > Export

3) You have three options: (1) “Export to Camera”, (2) “Export to QuickTime”, or (3) “Export to iDVD”.*

4) To create a master copy of your video on a VHS tape, choose “Export to Camera”
5) Make sure Canopus ADVC-100 DV converter is set to “Digital In”.
6) Place VHS tape in VCR.
7) Press “Record” on VCR.
8) Click “Export” on iMovie.
9) When video is done, press “Stop” on VCR and eject tape.
10) If you wish to store the video on your computer, send it to someone via e-mail, or load it into a PowerPoint, choose “Export to QuickTime” presentation, upload it to the World Wide Web, etc.
11) If you wish to put this video on a DVD choose “Export to iDVD” then follow the “iDVD tutorial”.

*Note: If you wish to export to DVD then make sure iDVD is running before you select “Export to iDVD”
