Admission Requirements for the
Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner Pathway

Commitment:  

The Post-Master's Nurse Practitioner Pathway is designed for students prepared to make a full-time commitment to study and internship.  Full time study is 8 graduate credits per quarter.  Internships will require arrangements for full days of practice. 
 

Education Requirements: 

  • Applicants must be in one of the following categories:

1. have completed the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree
     from Seattle Pacific University 

2. have completed an equivalent Master’s in Nursing program 

  • Applicants must have had a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in their Master's Degree.
  • A graduate-level clinical pathophysiology course or the equivalent must precede or be taken during the first quarter of NP pathway.

Practice Requirements: 

  • Applicants must have recent professional nursing practice.
  • Applicants must have a current Washington State Nursing license with no practice restrictions.

Statement of Goals: 

Applicants must provide a statement of your goals.  This short essay (no more than two pages) must  include: 

Applicant's philosophy of advanced nursing practice and patient care.  Be specific about the nurse practitioner’s actions in the context of that philosophy.

Applicant's reasons for selecting a nurse practitioner program and engaging in this focus of nursing.  It must include:

1. personal goals and objectives. 
2. perceived strengths and barriers in reaching the role. 
3. specific examples of applicant's ability to work with an interdisciplinary health care team and other service providers. 
4. the location and/or population teh applicant anticipates serving on completion of the program (e.g. rural, medically under-served, ethnically diverse populations, areas of public health special need, etc.). 
 

Interview:  

Call the Graduate Admissions Counselor at (206) 281-2888 to arrange for a one-hour interview with the Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Health Sciences.  Applicant should be prepared to discuss your commitment to participate in the nurse practitioner courses, maintain timely completion of the requirements and plan for the certification examination. 
 

Letters of Reference Requirements: 

Using the forms provided, request three letters of reference.  Letters should be sent by the writer directly to the School of Health Sciences and include: 

  • Two letters from professional nursing colleagues. 
  • One letter from a long-standing personal contact who can address your integration of personal values and professional commitments in daily life.
