A
program designed for Nurses with a Baccalaureate degree. Courses
are Masters level and count toward electives in the Graduate Program. The
program consists of a series of courses that form a cohesive body of study. Upon
successful completion of the program students receive a certificate.
Program
Overview
This
four-course program is intended for individuals involved in nursing education
or nursing staff development. Participants learn the principles and skills
needed to become an effective educator. Courses include opportunity for
practical application of acquired skills and development of a teaching portfolio. To

Course
Development and Teaching Strategies: 3 credits
This course is designed to provide nurse educators
in both academic and service settings with knowledge and practical
skills to become an effective educator. Course content includes
philosophy of teaching/learning, learning styles, critical thinking,
course development, teaching strategies, evaluation, documentation,
integration of technology. Opportunity for developing and presenting
a learning module is included.
Nurse
Educator Internship: 3 credits
This course is designed to provide practice teaching experience in
classroom and clinical settings under supervision of a faculty preceptor/mentor.
Course content includes application of content from Course Development
and Teaching Strategies, plus models on coaching, documentation, clinical
evaluation, and management of learner issues. (Pre-requisite:
Course Development and Teaching Strategies, or by permission of
faculty.)
Role
Development for Nurse Educators: 3 credits
This course for nurse educators includes philosophy of nursing
education, curriculum design, research, publishing, grant writing,
interpersonal dynamics and team-work in academic and practice settings,
functioning within institutional expectations, developing a teaching
portfolio, legal issues, and future directions in nursing education.
Using
Technology in Teaching: 3 credits
This course focuses on using and incorporating technology in
teaching strategies; this course can be taken at SPU or another
community college or university.
