Accessing and completing SPU's online Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Training

All new faculty and staff of Seattle Pacific University are required to successfully complete training in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Training must be complete before any employee can request access to the Banner Information System.

FERPA refers to the federal policy that Seattle Pacific University is required to uphold in order to protect the privacy of its students. It governs the kind of information that can be released to the public and what information that must be kept confidential.

FERPA training is available online through the Online Learning system (Blackboard). To get signed up for FERPA training, or if you have any questions, email ferpa@spu.edu. Please include your name and SPU email address. The tutorial will take approximately 45 minutes. You will be required to watch several video clips and then complete five short assessments to test your knowledge. You can take the tests as many times as needed, since a perfect score is required. Once you have received a perfect score on each test, simply email ferpa@spu.edu again and your training will be complete!
