The play, which takes place in Ballybeg, County Donegal, Ireland, during the festival of Lughnasa, is Michael's memory of the five women who raised him: his mother and his four maiden aunts. Three disturbances (a new radio, a returned uncle, and a visit from Michael's father) in the summer of 1936 threaten to destroy the foundation of this family forever.
