Music Therapy

Welcome to Seattle Pacific University’s Music Therapy program — the first undergraduate Music Therapy program in Washington state.

The SPU Music Therapy program’s rigorous, multidisciplinary curriculum is designed to train musicians both to realize their full potential as music therapists and to pass the national examination to earn their Board Certified Music Therapist designation.

A distinct element of SPU’s program is the encouragement of wellness — one’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The program also offers many opportunities for musicians to use their skills and aptitude to serve others through the functional use of music.

I invite musicians who are creative, empathetic, and motivated learners, and who possess a sincere desire to serve others, to consider our program and the vocation that music therapy offers.

Carlene J. Brown, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Music
Director, Music Therapy Program

What Is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is an established health care profession that uses music within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals or groups of individuals.

Children, adolescents, adults, and seniors have been shown to benefit from music therapy treatment through its use in physical rehabilitation, pain management, creative expression, enriched special education services, emotional support, socialization, and wellness programs.

Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses.
