Applying for a Fine Arts Scholarship: Step by Step

Whatever form your creativity takes -- theatre, music or visual art -- you may qualify for a Seattle Pacific University scholarship ranging from $500 to $3,000. And you don't have to demonstrate financial need or be an arts major to qualify. Just follow the steps below.

Schedule an Audition

1. Plan to audition at Seattle Pacific University on one of the following dates: November 4, 2005; January 28, February 24 & 25, 2006.

2. Complete the Scholarship Form and submit it.

3. Prepare for one or more of the following:
   
   • Art Portfolio Review. Bring representative works from your portfolio. If possible, bring works done in more than one medium. Faculty members are interested in works that span some time and show artistic development.
     
   • Theatre Audition.
     
     • Acting -- Plan to present two memorized and contrasting readings of your choice, totaling approximately five minutes. In addition, you will be asked to present a one-minute expository pantomime. It should be complete in itself and tell a story. *Please provide a printed theatre resume and a photo (senior picture, head shot, etc.) at the time of your audition.
       
     • Technical Theatre -- Bring a portfolio of three to five pieces that best represent any design or technical work you have completed in scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, or props. When interviewed, be ready to support your portfolio.
       
   • Music Audition. Applicants must provide a music resume at their audition.
     
     • Vocalists should plan to sing two works. At least one should be an aria or art song from the classical repertoire; the other may be a contrasting work of the same (folk song arrangement, musical theatre, etc. are also acceptable). Accompanists are provided on each of the scheduled audition dates, but we are unable to provide an accompanist for individual appointments. Please provide a resume at the time of audition.
     • Pianists and instrumentalists should plan to play two pieces from contrasting periods, not more than five minutes each. An excerpt or movement from a longer composition would be acceptable. You may also be asked to do some sight reading. Please provide a resume at the time of audition.

4. If you are unable to audition on one of the dates listed above, you have two options:
   
   • Audition by Mail. If you are some distance from Seattle and cannot conveniently schedule an on-campus audition, you may audition by mail. For an art portfolio review, please send good quality photographs, slides, or CDs. For a theatre audition, provide a videocassette. For a music audition, please send a high quality recording on a CD or an audio cassette tape. Please do not edit your recording, or include effects (such as reverb.) We will not be able to return photographs or tapes.
     
   • Audition by Special Appointment. You may schedule an individual audition as available by calling the Division of Fine Arts at (206) 281-2205. Auditions by appointment cannot be scheduled on weekends. Auditions must be completed by February 25, 2006.

5. Auditions must be completed before March 1, 2006, to receive priority evaluation.

Apply for Admission to SPU

1. Complete an SPU Undergraduate Admission Application and send it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Seattle Pacific University, 3307 3rd Avenue West, Seattle, WA 98119. To receive an application for admission, send an e-mail to Undergraduate Admissions.

2. Submit your application materials to Seattle Pacific, including application, official transcript from all high schools/colleges attended, offical SAT or ACT test scores (freshman only), recommendations and application fee.

3. Submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1, 2006 (if you wish to apply for financial aid).

4. You will be notified of University admission soon after all your application materials have been received and reviewed. Freshman and transfers must apply for admission to SPU by February 15, 2006 in order to recieve the maximum amount of financial aid for which you qualify.
5. Fine arts scholarships will be awarded only to students who have been accepted for admission to the University.
