In 1971-1972, Wayne Balch continued as director of the Oratorio Society and Philip Mack as director of the Concert Choir. Wadad Saba took over as director of the SPU Singers.
The Concert Choir presented their local concerts and a special Christmas program on December 3, 1971. They enjoyed their annual tour through Northern California, Los Angeles area, Arizona and Oregon. They also experienced a unique Asian tour to Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Manila and Honolulu from June 8 through July 2.
1971-1972 Repertoire
The Oratorio Society presented their two major concerts on December 5, 1971, and May 21, 1972. In their December Christmas program at the Opera House The performed a concert titled "Carols and Chorales for Christmas." The music featured the "Ceremony of Carols" by Benjamin Britten, "There Shall a Star Come Out of Jacob" by Mendelssohn, "Break Forth, O Beauteous Heav'nly Light " by J. S. Bach, "Born Today" by Sweelinck, "Christmas Day" by Gustav Holst, and " Fantasia on Christmas Carols" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The program featured Joyce Birchman and Carrie Kourkoumelis on harp and Paul Baker on organ. Soloist on the program were Ron Attrell, baritone; Joanne Brogan, mezzo-soprano; Wesley Jackson, bass; Frances Martin, soprano; Tim Walker, tenor; and Jerry Giger, baritone. Their May Concert featured Haydn's "The Creation" at the College Church. Marcile Mack accompanied on piano and Lester Groom on organ. Soloists were Gail Anderson, soprano; Virginia Lockard, soprano; David Parker, tenor; Jerry Giger, baritone; and Paul Hayden, baritone.
