I. DESCRIPTION
Prerequisite: MUS 1101, 1102, 1103. Presents the basics on the use of voices in choral music and how to arrange for them. Practical experience in arranging for various combinations of voices. May be repeated for credit 2 times. Class not open to: Freshman, Sophomore.

V. ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS
1. Examination and analysis of published arrangements as assigned.
Written summaries of these analyses as assigned.
2. For each topic, written assignments as described in class.
Due dates as given when assigned.
3. Mid-term project
A short, 32-64 measure arrangement of a simple hymn of folk song.
Use of SATB or SAB voicing as basis for arrangement.
Use of techniques covered to that time will be expected.
Selection of tune used to be approved by instructor.
Graded on:
Accuracy and application of techniques
Clarity of notation and scoring
Creativity and originality in voicings, harmonizations, and form
4. Final project
A full choral arrangement of a hymn, folksong, or other melodic material.
Use of any voicing (SATB, SAB, SSA, TTB, or other multiple voicings) as basis for arrangement.
Use of techniques covered is expected.
Introduction and Ending encouraged, if appropriate.
Selection of tune used to be approved by instructor.
Final form to be "copy ready", i.e. in usable form for a choral ensemble.
If arrangement is of high quality, possibilities include:
- performance by a SPU choral ensemble
- submission to publishers for publication.

Accuracy and application of techniques
Clarity of notation and scoring
Creativity and originality in voicings, harmonizations, and form
5. Use of computer notation technology is encouraged.
6. Additional topics may include copyright issues and publication procedures.
