Independent Listening Log

During the course of the term, each student is required to listen to a total of 30 hours of music outside of class- and average of 3 hours per week. There are three sections to this assignment, as delineated below.

For each hour of listening, a minimum of one full page of notes is required, please use back of each page for additional notes, if needed. Please use the "Listening Log" (pdf) to document your work- this log will be a part of your final notebook. Document with dates, what you listened to, your thoughts about what you heard, and the amount of time you listened to a particular song, relating to topics covered in class. When listening to an entire CD or album, you must document your listening with at least one page of notes per hour- a line or two for an entire CD is not acceptable. You may supplement the following lists with radio broadcasts, personal recordings, recordings from libraries and friends, television, etc. Use the log form to total your time. You must complete the first page of the log at the end of the term, totaling your time.

Since there is little else in the way of homework, this is extremely important. The Listening Log will be included in your final notebook.

NOTE: Listening is to be just that. You must actively listen when working on this assignment and cannot include times when using music as "background"or doing other activities (this means don't count listening in a car when driving!)

This 30 hour total is a sum of the following assignments, in three sections.

Section 1. CHOICE – 8 hours of popular music of your choice.

Your particular taste in music is acceptable in this section, but not all. You must demonstrate a variety of styles heard.

Section 2. RADIO – 4 hours of music from the following radio broadcasts. Minimum of two different stations in the 4 hour total. You may use total time of listening to a radio station, including advertisements (but not news, etc.), but remember to supply the total time listened in your log. Since it is often difficult to obtain all the pertinent information from a radio broadcast, some leeway is allowed in details. Do the best you can in acquiring information (for example, some songs may not be announced, but be sure to remember that some stations back-announce, i.e., info is given after the song and not before).

The list includes those CDs that are part of the general holdings (noted with SPU catalogue number) and CDs that are on reserve that are a part of the instructor's personal collection made available for your listening. You may supplement these recordings with those from other sources (holdings in other libraries, personal recordings, radio, etc.) and SPU Library holdings in vinyl LPs, which are not listed. You may research those holdings as you wish.
