Bachelor of Arts: Textiles, Clothing and Interiors
Emphasis: Interior Design

Interior designers specialize in the planning of the interior element of a building's design. Those buildings may be residential or commercial (entertainment, government/institutional, health care, hospitality/restaurant, office, retail, etc.). Interior designers create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, efficient and safe, and enhance the quality of the working and/or living environment.

The interior design program prepares students for a variety of entry-level positions in interior design. This interdisciplinary program combines courses from Art, Business and Family and Consumer Sciences. To fulfill major degree requirements, students must complete the FCS core (9 - 10 credits) and the courses specific to interior design (80 - 83 credits). Our program features a student chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), a required internship (FCS 4940), AutoCAD courses, and a liaison program with FIDM (the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising).

Liaison Program with the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising

Interior Design students have an exciting opportunity to pursue a concentrated year of study in interior design at FIDM in Los Angeles, California. The FIDM program provides intense training in the technical areas of interior design and a strong focus on commercial design. Students electing to participate in this program apply to FIDM during their junior year and attend during their senior year. Upon successful completion of both programs, students earn an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in interior design from FIDM and a BA degree from SPU. Students considering this option should seek advisement early in their academic careers in order to meet the requirements of both FIDM and SPU in a timely manner.
