Sustainability

Sustainability Committee

The Sustainability Committee, formed in 2008, acts as a recommending body to the President's Cabinet on matters of environmental stewardship. Currently, its primary focus is developing a climate action plan, as required by the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Students, faculty, and staff from all areas of the University serve on this committee.

Charge

This committee is responsible for developing a University statement on sustainability and a climate action plan, both of which will be presented to Cabinet for consideration and approval.  The statement will articulate how sustainability fits into SPU's identity as a premier, Christian university while the climate action plan will detail the timeline for SPU to become carbon neutral.  This plan, to be submitted to the ACUPCC by May 15, 2010, will incude project and policy recommendations, budget considerations to ensure phased implementation of the plan, and a goal year for climate neutrality.  Because keeping our commitment is dependent on individual as well as insitution actions, the climate action plan will also include strategies to integrate sustainable behavior into the lifestyles of campus community members, engaging our own culture in focused environmental stewardship.

Committee Members

Staff committee members were appointed by members of the President's Cabinet, while faculty member recommendations are approved by the Faculty Chair.  Student members are chosen out of either ASSP or the Seattle Pacific Environmental Network.
