Tom first came to the Pacific Northwest to study Renaissance literature with Joan Mallory Webber, who became his graduate school mentor. He wrote his dissertation on Milton’s Paradise Lost and became interested in teaching writing and literature while supporting his graduate work with a teaching assistantship. Tom teaches creative nonfiction and early-English literature, with a lifelong love of Renaissance lit, especially the exuberance of the Tudor poets and the epic genius of John Milton. His research interests continue in theories of rhetoric and what he calls “the rhetoric of ultimate things.” He serves as director of writing requirements at SPU.
When not teaching, reading, or writing, Tom builds stuff, with the dream of someday creating a chair he actually feels comfortable sitting in, and grows fruits and vegetables. He’s a state-approved forest steward.
