...to learn strategies for helping underrepresented children cooperatively experience success in science.

For those educators with a limited background in science, or for those interested in learning science appropriate for K12 students, Seattle Pacific University offers an endorsement program in Earth science as well as courses which could lead to a biology endorsement. The 24-credit Earth science endorsement can be completed in just two summers. All courses are designed to help teachers understand scientific concepts, gain confidence with hands-on activities, and develop a variety of teaching strategies to help children successfully learn science within the context of the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements.

Background of Project SUCCESS
Project SUCCESS has been developing over an eleven-year period through numerous planning sessions with advisory groups of teachers and science experts. As a result, the program's goals and objectives have been continually refined to meet the specific needs of teachers. Project SUCCESS is committed to preparing teachers to help all their students successfully learn science.

Project SUCCESS Provides:

  • Coverage of concepts and skills necessary to help your students meet the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements;
  • Development of an awareness of underrepresented students' needs related to their abilities to learn science;
  • Models of teaching strategies, including cooperative learning and multiple intelligences;
  • Exposure and access to a wide selection of area resources, experts and instructional technologies, including the Internet;
  • Activity handouts and assessment tools to use in your classroom next fall;
  • Field trips to Northwest sites to examine resources using the tools and methods of the field scientist; and
  • Collections of rocks, organisms and photographs you can use with your students in a variety of activities.
Overview of the Courses
In recent geological time, human activity has affected our planetary systems in ways that may change the very nature of the Earth. Many global environmental problems must be dealt with in the next 20 years. The environmental problems of natural resource consumption and depletion, growth of pollution and waste disposal are so important that teachers must increase their students' awareness, concern and willingness to take personal action. Therefore, all courses in Project SUCCESS will incorporate analysis of these issues as an essential theme.
