Biotechnology Applications for Teachers (BIO 5325) The scientific basis of current biotech applications for the classroom will be emphasized. Techniques that will be taught and demonstrated include: basic genetics and cell biology, chromosome preparation, DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis, simulated cytoplasmic cloning, restriction analysis, blotting techniques and bacteriology. All lab exercises will be carried out using commercially available preparations and minimal specialized equipment enabling a smooth transfer of techniques to individual high school classrooms. Participants will develop a file of activities, biotech applications for teaching, catalog information for ordering, resource people and lesson plans for use in their classroom. Coast and Cascade Range Geology (NMS 5411) Participants will be visiting key geologic sites pertaining to the geology of the Coastal Ranges of Oregon and Northern California. Coastal areas will include the mouth of the Columbia River, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation area and Sea Lion Caves. Representative volcanic landscapes include Mt. Shasta, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Crater Lake and Bend volcanic fields. Mono Lake, Pyramid Lake, Shasta Caverns and Yosemite will provide opportunity to study the geomorphology produced by water and ice. You will be collecting samples and taking photographs useful in teaching geology. Instructor: Jack Jansons Date/Location: August 214, 1999. 9a.m.4p.m., MondaySaturday. Location: see itinerary. Additionally, participants must pay for camping, park fees, transportation and meal expenses, which are estimated at $500$700 per person. Class is limited to 20 students. All registrations for this course must be received by July 9 to secure your place in the class. A nonrefundable deposit of $200 is required at registration so the instructors can make travel arrangements. More details will be provided by mail after registration is completed and deposit is paid. Participants may bring family on the trip, but must provide their own travel, camping and meals. Registration deadline: July 9, 1999.
