The
Morris K. Udall Foundation was established by the U.S. Congress
in 1992 to honor Morris King Udall's thirty years of service in
the House of Representatives. Morris
Udall's career was distinguished by civility, integrity, and consensus,
as well as a commitment to preservation of the nation's natural
environment. Consistent with these values, the Udall Foundation
is committed to educating a new generation of Americans to preserve
and protect their national heritage through studies in the environment,
Native American health and tribal policy, and effective public
policy conflict resolution.
Awards:
Each year, the Morris K. Udall Foundation
awards eighty undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to juniors
and seniors in fields related to the environment, and to Native
American and Alaska Natives in fields related to health care or
tribal policy. Thirty students will be named "Honorable Mentions"
and receive awards of $350.
Selection criteria:
- Extensive record of campus and
community service directed towards environmental issues and
causes, or to tribal policy or health care.
- Demonstrated commitment to and
career goals consistent with improving, preserving, protecting
or restoring our environmental resources, or to tribal public
policy or health care.
- Knowledge and understanding of
Morris K. Udall's legacy of public service, particularly as
it relates to career goals.
- Demonstrated leadership, character, integrity
and well-roundedness.
Eligibility:
- Be
a sophomore or junior at an accredited two or four year institution
at the time of nomination.
- Have
a college grade-point average of at least a "B" or
equivalent.
- U.S.
citizen, permanent resident alien, or a U.S. national (in the
case of nominees from American Samoa).
- For
the health care or tribal policy scholarships be a Native American
or Alaska Native.
Application:
- To apply
for a Udall Scholarship, you must be nominated by the SPU faculty
representative. The SPU faculty representative for this scholarship
is Cindy Fitch.
- The
SPU application deadline is January
18, 2008.
- The
national Udall Scholarship review committee must receive the
completed nomination package for candidates from a faculty representative
by March 3, 2007.
