K-12 Teacher Support Network
This
program provides an opportunity for full-time teachers to
engage in theological reflection on their work. Through the
mentorship program, first-year teachers are able to stay in
contact with SPU faculty.
Maintaining
the Call to Teach: A
program encouraging teachers to remain connected to their call
in the classroom
Many are called to teach children and young people in schools
throughout the nation. Unfortunately, in the State of Washington
up to fifty percent of these classroom teachers leave the profession
within the first five years. The School of Education at Seattle
Pacific University has partnered with the Lilly Foundation to
encourage beginning teachers and those who have taught for a
few years to renew their vocation: the call to teach in the
classroom.
A program is being developed to encourage teachers to remain
in the classroom by offering them emotional and practical support,
and helping them to renew their call to serve as teachers.
Mentoring the First-Year Teacher: This
program is designed to offer first-year teachers the support
of a mentor from the faculty of the School of Education. The
role of the mentor is to encourage, counsel, and support the
emotional and practical needs of a teacher experiencing the
challenges and complexities of teaching in the classroom for
the very first time. Mentors will make onsite visits to create
a collaborative and collegial relationship that benefits the
teacher.
