Each year
the National Science Foundation awards approximately 1,000 three-year
Graduate Fellowships. NSF Fellows are expected to contribute significantly
to research, teaching and industrial applications in science,
mathematics and engineering. (Awards are offered for women in
engineering and computer and information science.)
Awards:
Fellowships
are awarded for graduate study leading to research-based master's
or doctoral degrees in the fields of science (natural, physical
and social), mathematics and engineering. Awards are also made
for work toward a research-based Ph.D. in science education. Practice-oriented
programs are not eligible for support. Research with disease-related
goals is also not eligible for support.
Eligibility:

Applicants must be a college senior, first-year graduate student,
or someone who has completed a limited amount of graduate study
in science, mathematics, or engineering.

An applicant must be a citizen or national of the U.S. or a
permanent resident alien of the U.S.
-
Women who intend to pursue graduate degrees in engineering or
in computer and information science and engineering and who
meet the eligibility requirements above can apply for the additional
WENG or WICS awards.

Fast Lane:
An applicant can submit an application electronically using
the NSF Fast Lane Graduate Research Fellowship Program process.
Referees of applicants who use Fast Lane can submit a Reference
Report Form using Fast Lane. Security is provided to ensure
that both applications and references can be seen only by authorized

For faculty submitting reference reports for fellowship applicants:
- These
scholarships are extremely competitive, and applications should
be initiated well before the deadline. It will take some time
to gather supporting documentation and the statement of applicant's
interest must be carefully composed.

The Advisor for major scholarships, Susan Gallagher, will assist
students in preparing their application if sufficient time is
allowed (at least six weeks prior to the campus deadline of
October 1, 2007). NOTE: Applications are no longer being accepted for this scholarship.
