Beauty: What’s Justice Got to Do With It?
Welcome! The 2008 Lilly Fellows Program National Conference at Seattle Pacific University will consider the relationship of beauty, justice, and suffering in a series of plenary sessions, interactive discussions, and forays into the Seattle community.
Plenary Sessions
The keynote address, "Beauty and Justice," will be delivered by Professor Nicholas Wolterstorff, faculty emeritus of philosophical theology at Yale Divinity School and author of works on beauty (Works and Worlds of Art; Art in Action: Toward a Christian Aesthetic) and justice (Until Justice and Peace Embrace; and the 2008 book Justice: Rights and Wrongs).
In additional plenary sessions, Professor Christine Chaney, chair of SPU’s English department, will examine “Beauty and Truth” through consideration of literature and film, and Professor Benita Wolters-Fredlund, assistant professor of music at Calvin College, in conjunction with Seattle Pacific University's Concert Choir directed by Assistant Professor David Anderson, will explore “Beauty and Suffering in the Music of the Holocaust.”
Explore Seattle’s Beauty
Conference participants will experience the beauty of Seattle both at their lakeside hotel, Marriott Courtyard Downtown Lake Union, and in a “Plunge Into Beauty” field experience, which will include guided tours of the Olympic Sculpture Park, of the award-winning Chapel of St. Ignatius at Seattle University, and of a “green” architecture studio specializing in sustainability and design.
Register today. We look forward to you joining us in the Northwest for a time of thought-provoking discussions and community-building events.
