Friday @ the Center
September 11, 2009
Welcome!
With the annual SPU Faculty Retreat and various School and Department gatherings underway, we're moving full steam ahead into a new academic year. Welcome back to campus and to the weekly Friday @ the Center newsletter, your source for information and inspiration about the multifaceted job of the vocation of the teacher-scholar.
Wanted! Day of Common Learning Proposals
There still are many openings for this year's Day of Common Learning break-out sessions. Please email your ideas and proposals for sessions on either "Transformational Leadership" or "Abraham Lincoln" to me by Monday, Sept. 21. Who are the transformational leaders in your discipline? How does transformational leadership look different in politics and ministry, science and art, health sciences and social work? Please include a proposed title, brief descriptive paragraph, and names of participants. Interdisciplinary sessions and those led involving a mix of faculty and students are especially encouraged.
Writing? Explore Publishing Options
Chris Spink, the editor of Wipf & Stock, will be on campus Wednesday, Sept. 16, to meet with interested faculty about their publishing projects. Wipf & Stock publishes titles in biblical studies, theology, ethics, church history, linguistics, history, classics, philosophy, preaching, and church ministry. One of their most recent publications is Jesus Girls: True Tales of Growing Up Female and Evangelical, edited by Hannah Faith Notess, the 2008-2009 Milton Center postgraduate writing fellow at SPU. You are invited to a light lunch in the library conference room from 12 until 1 p.m. at which Chris will provide a general introduction to publishing with Wipf & Stock. Please notify Rob Wall if you plan to attend. And if you have a particular project underway that you would like to discuss with Chris, Rob can arrange a 30 minute individual meeting during the afternoon of Sept. 16.
Wondering? ...about Grant Writing at SPU?
Watch for a new quarterly e-publication named Granted that will carry all the latest news about awards received by SPU faculty, upcoming deadlines, resources for grant writing, and SPU and governmental grant writing policies. Edited by Laura Lundahl, Assistant Director for Grants, Granted will arrive in your inbox soon.
Cheers,
