Chairs’ Primary Responsibilities

Faculty Matters

  • Recruit new faculty consistent with SPU mission
  • Assist with faculty advancement procedures:
    • Third-year review (due in spring)
    • Tenure (due in early autumn)
    • Promotion (due in autumn)
    • Step increases (due early winter)
    • Chair post-tenure review committees (due end of spring)
    • Conduct reviews on three-year cycle for non-tenured faculty (due in spring)
    • Recommend emeritus status for retiring faculty (due in autumn)
  • Contribute to faculty development
    • Observe classroom teaching of adjunct and continuing faculty
    • Keep faculty current on advising issues and policy changes
    • Review faculty Professional Development Plans (annually for non-tenured faculty) (due in autumn)
    • Assist in application process for Faculty Research Grants (FRG) and Academic Renewal Grants (ARG) (due in winter)


Administrative Matters

  • Conduct regular department meetings; update faculty on policy changes
  • Manage day-to-day operations and budget (c onsult with CAS budget manager as needed)
  • Submit requests for capital expenditures to Dean
  • Participate in CAS Chairs ' Meetings
  • Advocate for department to dean and Academic Affairs
  • Represent department to outside constituencies


Curricular and Student Matters

  • Manage oversight and development of curriculum
    • Catalog copy (due in autumn) and
    • Time Schedule (due in winter)
    • Load sheets and adjunct requests to Dean (due in winter)
    • Assessment Report and updates (due in spring)
  • Implement formal program review (UPEC, GPEC)
  • Facilitate departmental curricular innovation
  • Review student major and minor applications;
  • Make recommendations on student academic petitions
  • Manage student complaints
