BIO 1100 Biological Science: Marine Biology (5 credits)

June 25 - July 6, Rick Ridgway

Course Description: A field-based course designed for non-biology majors, introducing the major themes of modern biology. Each version of this course focuses on a special topic, depending on the instructor and as noted in the course title. This course meets the "Natural Science A" general education requirement at SPU.  The cost for this course will be approximately $3,200, including tuition, room and board, and transportation to Blakely Island from Anacortes, Washington.

BIO 4256 Environmental Physiology (5 credits)

August 6-17, Ryan Ferrer

Course Description:  This course focuses on how individuals respond physiologically to their environment especially to maintain homeostasis and acquire nutrients.  Topics covered will include circadian rhythms and responses to various stressors (e.g., light, heat, salinity, climate change, hyopoxia). Two recurring themes will include discussion of the way in which organisms balance acclimation and adaptation; and the manner in which organisms balance tradeoffs. The cost for this course will be approximately $3,200, including tuition, room and board, and transportation to Blakely Island from Anacortes, Washington.

BIO 4815 Aquatic Ecology (5 credits)

June 11 - 22, Lindsay Whitlow

Course Description:  Introduces students to the biology of freshwater organisms. The physical, chemical and biological characteristics of flowing and standing water habitats will be studied. The field and laboratory work will focus on lakes, streams and marshes found on Blakely Island.  The cost for this course will be approximately $3,200, including tuition, room and board, and transportation to Blakely Island from Anacortes, Washington.

BIO 4835 Conservation Biology(5 credits)

July 23 - August 3 Eric Long

Course Description:  Conservation Biology is the science concerned with the conservation of biological diversity. The course will consider values of, threats to, and strategies for conserving biodiversity. We will apply theories of conservation biology to local biodiversity concerns in the region. Field exercises, while teaching techniques for assessing biodiversity of distinct taxa, will also hone skills for identifying the diversity of plants and animals near the field station.  The cost for this course will be approximately $3,200, including tuition, room and board, and transportation to Blakely Island from Anacortes, Washington.

BIO / GEO 4950 Introduction to Geographical Information Systems (3 credits)

September 9 - 15 Tim Nelson

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the use of Geographic Information Systems.  Specifically, the student will learn how to use ArcGIS with prepared data sets, and will create their own GIS database as a term project based on observations on the island.  The cost for this course will be approximately $2,000, including tuition, room and board, and transportation to Blakely Island from Anacortes, Washington.

PHY 1135 Astronomy (5 credits)

July 9 -21 , John Lindberg

Course Description: This course will begin on the main campus (July 9-13) and move to Blakely Island Field Station for a concentrated period of observation (July 16-21). An integrative general introduction to astronomy, including astronomical observation and measurement, the solar system, extragalactic phenomena, and cosmology; includes the scientific method and world-view implications. This course meets the "Natural Science B" general education requirement at SPU.  The cost for this course will be approximately $3,200, including tuition, room and board while on Blakely Island, and transportation to Blakely Island from Anacortes, Washington.
