BIFS Driving Directions

Most people traveling to Blakely Island Field Station choose to drive to Skyline Marina in Anacortes, Washington and ride from there to Blakely Island on board one of Paraclete Charter Services' vessels (M/V Paraclete, M/V Koinonia, or M/V Sylvan Spirit).

It is also possible to fly to Blakely Island from Anacortes or other local airports, including Boeing Field in Seattle (with van service from Sea-Tac International Airport to Boeing Field, if needed). Please contact the field station director or manager if you would like to pursue this option

Driving Directions to Paraclete Charters, Anacortes, WA
Departure Point for Blakely Island Field Station

To reach the marina, drive north on I-5 from Seattle through Mount Vernon and take Exit #230, State Route 20 and 20 Spur to Anacortes.  (If travelling from points north of Mount Vernon, the same exit from I-5 will work.) This exit will be signed for "San Juan Ferries" as well. In Anacortes follow the signs directing you toward the Washington State Ferry: north on Commercial Avenue, west on 12th , continuing west on Oakes. You will come to a “Y” in the road, where the road to the Washington State Ferry is on the right, and the road to the Skyline Marina (Sunset Ave.) is on the left . From Sunset Ave., turn left (south) on Skyline Way . The marina will be on the left, and there are a few parking spaces near the Pen-Mar Marine store that you may use while you unload.  (NOTE: Do not leave your vehicle here while on Blakely Island, as it will be towed.)

The exact location at which the boat docks may be found at http://www.paracletecharters.com/ .  Please check this site before you leave for any updates to the docking location.  You will need to know the name of the vessel you are travelling on to find its dock. However, all 3 vessels are moored within site of each other; if you are unsure you can visit all 3 slips and talk to any Paraclete Charters personnel you see to verify which boat you will be travelling on.

The long-term parking is across the street in a lot marked “Decatur Northwest Homeowners Association”.  The most obvious sign may be a barrel marked “DNW Impound”.  To avoid being towed, please park in the unpaved “back” portion of this lot, in the marked spaces if any are visible.  You should allow at least 2.5 hours (depending on Seattle traffic) for the drive from Seattle to the marina, unloading, loading, and parking.  It will take you some time to unload and move your vehicle to the Decatur lot, so leave plenty of time since the boat leaves promptly .

Driving from Seattle to Anacortes at rush hour can be very slow. With no traffic, the trip takes approximately 2 hours. At rush hour, you should plan on leaving Seattle 3 hours before your scheduled departure from Anacortes. This allows 15-30 minutes to park your vehicle and load gear on board the vessel.

If you miss the boat, call our on-site manager at 1 360 375 6721 or 1 360 375 6001.  If you don't get an answer, you can also call the charter boat company directly at 1 800 808 2999.  They may be able to put you on a later boat.  If so, you will have to pay an additional $20.  (BIFS has to pay for your being on the boat you're scheduled for whether you show up or not.)
