SEATTLE (Nov. 13) ― Seattle University got two goals from Leah Wymer to defeat top-ranked and previously undefeated Seattle Pacific University 2-0 in the NCAA Division II women's soccer Far West Regional championship game Saturday night before a near-capacity crowd at Interbay Stadium.

The 15th-ranked Redhawks (16-3-3) advance to the national quarterfinal stage and will face the winner of Sunday's Metro State-Regis game next weekend in Denver.

Seattle U. wasted no time in taking charge. Wymer, a freshman from Bothell, took down a loose ball and struck a 25-yard shot high into the left corner 3 minutes, 8 seconds after kickoff. It was Wymer's seventh of the season and it was only the second time this season which SPU (19-1-2) conceded the game's first goal.

Wymer then gave her team some breathing room in the 61st minute. On a counterattack, Cassy Smith slid a ball through which Wymer banged past an onrushing Hull from the top of the box.

Seattle Pacific, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion which owned the nation's No. 1 scoring defense in the regular season, allowed as many goals in its two playoff games (4) as its previous 20.

The Falcons had not been held scoreless in 34 games, and totaled 16 goals in their last four. Kelly Stewart made three saves to earn her 10th shutout.

The Falcons' first opportunity came in the 19th minute. A cross from Jean Kolb was nodded down by Jessica Henson to Sarah Martinez, whose left-footed try skidded just past the left post from 12 yards. In the 24th minute, Martinez laid off a ball for Sarah Melby to hit just over the crossbar from 22 yards.

In the second half, SPU continued to mount pressure. Henson's long right-wing cross found Lovejoy at the near post but she could not get around on the ball and her attempt went wide. The best chance to pull a goal back came in the 71st minute. A corner kick from Michelle Everson headed by Lovejoy and Melby shot to the right post but the ball appeared to hit the hand of a Seattle U. defender.

With its late rush, Seattle Pacific finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots, with Melby firing four.

SPU had not lost to SU in last five meetings, although the Redhawks had handed the Falcons their only regular-season blemish, a 1-1 draw at Championship Field Sept. 18. Seattle Pacific had dealt Seattle U. its worst loss of the season, 4-0, a week earlier at Interbay. The loss snapped a 26-game unbeaten string at home for the Falcons.

Seattle Pacific played its second game without top score Michelle Sanders, who suffered a knee injury in last week's game with Seattle U.
