SEATTLE - Tina Donahue matched a career-high with 21 points, including nine during a crucial stretch of the second half, as fourth-seeded Western Washington rebounded from a four-point halftime deficit to beat Sonoma State 85-71 in a quarterfinal game of the NCAA Division II West Regional women’s basketball tournament at Brougham Pavilion Friday night.

The Vikings now advance to the semifinals Saturday at 7:30 against either host Seattle Pacific or UC San Diego. Second-seeded Cal State Bakersfield will play third-seeded Cal Poly Pomona in the other semifinal game at 5:30 p.m.

Donahue had nine points as Western, which hit on eight of 12 three-point shots, outscored Sonoma 14-4 during a 6 ½ minute stretch building a one-point lead to 11 at 66-55 with 5:52 remaining. Donahue, who connected on eight of 15 shots including two of four three-pointers, scored the final six points of the run. She also had seven rebounds and six assists as the Vikings improved to 21-7 on the season.

Following the Vikings’ run, Sonoma got a pair of baskets by Maribel Ambriz and Jessica Jones to cut WWU’s lead by seven, but that was the closest they got as Western eventually built up its final 14-point margin, which was the largest of the game.

Five other players joined Donahue in double figures for Western. Jenn McGillivray had 15 points and Devin Dykstra had 13. Jodi Gerald had 12 and also added 12 rebounds. Tessa DeBoer and Samantha Hubbard each contributed 10 points. DeBoer also had nine rebounds and five assists.

Jessica Jones and Lacey Campbell each led Sonoma (17-11) with 17 points, while Tara Whiteside had 13 increasing her career total to 1,001. She is the third player in Sonoma history to score 1,000 points. Maribel Ambriz was also in double figures with 11 points.
