Godoy Goal Lifts No. 8 Falcons Over Central in 2nd Half
September 12, 2007

SEATTLE, Wa. (Sept. 12)—Janae Godoy scored the game-winning goal just under 17 minutes remaining in the game to lift 8th-ranked Seattle Pacific University to a 1-0 victory over Central Washington in its Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night at Interbay Stadium.

The win pushed Seattle Pacific to a perfect 7-0-0/1-0-0 on the season and marked its third consecutive shutout. Central Washington dropped to 3-3-0/0-1-0.

Godoy (So., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) broke the stalemate in the 73rd minute. The sophomore midfielder took advantage when a Central defender slipped near the corner of the penalty box on the right side.

Godoy quickly controlled the ball and pushed toward goal. Her 15-yard strike hit the far corner of the net. Keeper Aneesa Gonzales dove toward the corner but could not get a hand on the ball (73:02).

Gonzales registered a pair of saves in the contest as did SPU keeper Jesslyn Rahm (So., Eugene, Or./South Eugene). Overall, Seattle Pacific out-shot the visitor 13-2.

Central challenged Rahm with several long attempts in the first half, and played a physical game on defense, evidenced in their 11 fouls. Seattle Pacific was whistled five times.

The pace of the game quickened in the second half. With 37 minutes remaining, Shannon Oakes (Jr., Boise, Id.) broke free on a run down the left center and ripped a hard, spinning shot toward the far post that missed just wide right.

Two minutes later, Kara Hamby (Sr., Spokane, Wa./Mead) crossed from the right corner but Amanda Johnson’s (Fr., Duvall, Wa./Cedarcrest) header hit the near post.

Central forwards broke into SPU’s back line three times in the waning minutes of the game, but did not seriously threaten.

Seattle Pacific plays its next contest Saturday (Sept. 15) in a GNAC match-up with Western Washington. Kick-off is scheduled for 3PM.
