4th-Ranked Falcons Draw With Cal State LA in Double OT
September 11, 2007

Complete Box Score

LOS ANGELES (Sep. 11) – Jeff Coggan’s goal early in the first half put Seattle Pacific in the driver’s seat, but host Cal State LA answered midway through the second half and both defenses endured through two overtime periods as the West Region foes battled to a 1-1 draw in a nonconference men’s soccer contest Tuesday night at Jesse Owens Track.

Coggan (So., 6-0, San Jose, Ca./Valley Christian, Santa Clara) netted his second goal of the season in the 19th minute to give unbeaten and nationally fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific (4-0-2) a 1-0 lead.

That lead held up through the half, but the Golden Eagles found the back of the net in the second frame. LA’s Morten Marthinsen scored the equalizer in the 65th minute, his fifth goal of the season off an assist from John Massaquoi.

Both teams turned to their goalkeepers the rest of the way. SPU’s Kellen Rosten (Sr., 6-2, Colorado Springs, Co./Doherty) was credited with a match-high eight saves, including five in the two overtimes to preserve the tie. Cal State LA’s Tobias Hummel made six saves, five of them in regulation.

Marthinsen led all players with five shots. Jeff Hallenbeck (Sr., 5-8, Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) provided the spark on the SPU attack with three tries at goal, but Hummel denied them all.

Cal State LA (3-2-2), who dropped out of this week’s national poll after being ranked sixth last week, has won just once in its past five matches after winning its first two.

The Falcons are back in action Friday night in Phoenix against Grand Canyon.
