SEATTLE (Sept. 3) James Coggan scored
midway through the second overtime period to lift Seattle Pacific
University over Sonoma State 2-1 in a men's soccer game Monday at
Interbay Stadium.
Jeff Coggan (So., San Jose, Ca.) scored the
Falcons' (3-0-1) other goal in the first half as they matched
their best start in 14 years. The Seawolves (1-2-1) had forced
extra time when Andrew Bailey connected in the 73rd minute.
Scoring his second game-winner in as many
contests, James Coggan (Sr., San Jose, Ca.) ran under a long
looping ball from Jeff Hallenbeck (Sr., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor).
With Sonoma keeper Brook Johnson rushing off
his line, Coggan flipped the ball high over Johnson and into the
right corner to end the game at 104:08. It was Coggan's third goal
of the season.
The Seawolves were the aggressor for the final
65 minutes of regulation, finishing 90 minutes with a 23-8
advantage in shots and 7-4 in corners.
A side-volley by Bailey in the dying seconds of
the first overtime was saved by an outstretched SPU goalie Kellen
Rosten (Sr., Colorado Springs, Co.). In all, Rosten made 10 saves.
Seattle Pacific appeared refreshed to begin the
overtime and out-shot the visitors 5-4 in the extra 14 minutes.
Jeff Coggan's opening goal came at 22:47 on a
short header following an Alec Nelson (So., Lynnwodd,
Wa./Meadowdale) corner kick flicked-on by Hallenbeck.
Bailey equalized at 72:23, his low ball
catching the left post and deflecting into the rear of the net.

play Friday at Saint Martin's, the first of three straight road
games.
