SEATTLE (Sept. 1) An early goal by James
Coggan was sufficient to keep 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific
University undefeated in men's soccer with a 1-0 non-conference
win over San Francisco State Saturday night at Interbay Stadium.
It was the seventh win in the last eight home
games for the Falcons (2-0-1), who handed the Gators (2-1-0) their
first loss.
Although the visitors finished with 9-8 edge in
shots, none required a save from SPU keeper Kellen Rosten (Sr.,
Colorado Springs, Co.), who notched his 18th career shutout.
Coggan (Sr., San Jose, Ca.) scored his second
goal of the season in the 10th minute. After Jeff Hallenbeck's
(Sr., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) initial drive was batted down by
SFSU goalie Ezra Mendoza, Coggan corralled it and put the ball in
the net from 4 yards.
All three of Mendoza's saves came off
Hallenbeck, who was credited with an assist.
It was the second straight shutout for the
Seattle Pacific defense, which had earlier gone eight games
without holding an opponent scoreless.
The Falcons host Sonoma State Monday afternoon
at 1 p.m.
