SEATTLE (Aug. 30) Shannon Oakes struck
for the game's only goal in the 65th minute as 10th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University remained perfect in the young season with a 1-0
win over Sonoma State in a women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium
Thursday night.
Jesslyn Rham (So., Eugene, Or.) made four saves
to earn the shutout for the Falcons (3-0-0), who are unbeaten
(13-0-2) in their last 15 non-conference home games.
Oakes (Jr., Boise, Id.) fired five of the seven
SPU second-half shots at the Seawolf net, and she pierced the
defense midway through the period. A deep throw-in by Amanda
Johnson (Fr., Duvall, Wa./Cedarcrest) was flicked on by Sarah
Martinez (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian).
Oakes crack a left-footed drive from 10 yards
to beat Sonoma keeper Courtney Grixti low to the right post.
Seattle Pacific had just missed going in front
in the first half. Karen Hosler (Fr., Portland, Or.) came off the
bench to chip over Grixti, but her shot caromed off the crossbar.
The best scoring opportunity for the Seawolves
(1-2-0) came on a 28-yard free kick by Lindsay Catton moments
before the Oakes goal. Rahm caught the drive cleanly on the goal
line.
SPU finished with an 11-7 edge in shots and 7-1
in corners. Grixti also made four saves.
