SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Aug. 24) ­ Alyssa Given hit five of her 22 kills in the deciding fifth game as Seattle Pacific University upset No. 4-ranked UC San Diego at the Coyote Classic volleyball tournament Friday.

The 20th-ranked Falcons (1-1) beat a top-five team for the first time in two years, 26-30, 30-20, 32-30, 26-30 and 15-9.

Given (Sr., Salinas, Ca.) closed out the match with the final two points. She also had six blocks and two service aces. Angie Wodrich (Sr., Richland, Wa.) added 12 kills.

Seattle Pacific rebounded from a season-opening loss to host Cal State San Bernardino by hitting .168 and serving 12 aces.

Setter Joelle Perez (Fr., Vancouver, Wa./Heritage) led the way with five aces and Nikki Osuna (Fr., Bellflower, Ca.) had two, both in the fifth game.

The Tritons (1-1), defending regional champions, got 24 kills from Sylvia Schmidt but were out-blocked 19-6.5. UCSD is the highest-ranked opponent the Falcons have beaten since knocking off No. 1 Nebraska Kearney in 2005.

SPU completes the tournament Saturday with matches against Fort Lewis and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
