CHICO, Calif. (Aug. 23) Andy Wolverton
came off the bench to score what proved to be the game-winning
goal midway through the second half as Seattle Pacific University
held on for a 3-2 season-opening men's soccer win over Chico State
Thursday night.
Jeff Hallenbeck (Sr., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor)
and James Coggan (Sr., San Jose, Ca.) had staked the 22nd-ranked
Falcons (1-0-0) to a 2-1 lead.
Less than 10 minutes after entering the match,
Wolverton (Fr., Portland, Or./Jesuit) made it 3-1. He connected
from 15 yards after Coggan took a cross from Cory Sinser (So.,
Bellevue, Wa./Eastside Catholic) in the 69th minute.
The Wildcats (0-1-0) pulled a goal back with
6:10 remaining through Bryon Salata. Chico had opened the scoring
in the 25th minute on a goal by A.J. Carboneau.
Seattle Pacific got five saves from keeper
Kellen Rosten (Sr., Coloorado Springs, Co.) as the Wildcats
finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots.
Hallenbeck tied it at 1-1 by converting a free
kick from 22 yards at 28:10. Jeff Coggan (So., San Jose, Ca.)
set-up his older brother James for the lead less than five minutes
into the second half.
The Falcons visit Cal State Stanislaus Saturday
afternoon before returning home to host San Francisco State Sept.
