Falcons' 3-Year Run As GNAC Academic Champs Snapped
July 18, 2007

SEATTLE (July 18) ­ Seattle Pacific University's three-year run as winner of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Sports title has come to an end.

The Falcons were edged by Seattle University, 126-117, despite posting the highest team grade point averages in men's track and field, women's basketball and women's cross country. The latter boasted the highest GPA of any sport (3.65).

Saint Martin's was third overall with 100 points.

Seattle Pacific won its second straight GNAC All-Sports title in May.

In the women's division, Seattle Pacific was runner-up to Seattle U. and the Falcon men were third.

The Academic all-sports standings are based on the cumulative grade point averages of all the athletes on the official team rosters. Three of the academic champions also were champions on the playing field as well. Seattle University shared the men's soccer title with Seattle Pacific in addition to winning the academic title, while Seattle Pacific's women's cross country and women's basketball teams also earned GNAC titles.

Fifty-three of the conference's 80 teams posted cumulative GPAs of 3.00 or better, including all nine of the women's cross country teams and all eight of the women's track and field squads.

Individual academic sport winners:

  • Men: Cross Country ­ Seattle 3.17. Soccer ­ Seattle 3.31. Basketball ­ Saint Martin's 3.04. Baseball ­ Saint Martin's 3.20. Track-and-Field ­ Seattle Pacific 3.21.
  • Women: Volleyball ­ Western Oregon 3.56. Cross Country ­ Seattle Pacific 3.65. Soccer ­ Northwest Nazarene 3.47. Basketball ­ Seattle Pacific 3.41. Softball ­ Seattle University 3.12. Track and Field ­ Saint Martin's 3.58
