SEATTLE (June 13) Seattle Pacific
University track champion Jessica Pixler and basketball
All-American Dustin Bremerman have been voted the Great Northwest
Athletic Conference female athlete and male athletes of the year,
respectively, for all sports during 2006-07.
Bremerman (Sr., Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) becomes
the Falcons' third consecutive GNAC male award winner while Pixler
(Fr., Sammamish, Wa./Eastlake) is the fourth SPU female in six
years.
"This is quite an honor, and obviously
we feel Dustin is very deserving," said his coach, Jeff
Hironaka. "He is the epitome of the true student-athlete, a
good athlete, good student and good person.
"People recognize those qualities in
him, both on and off the court. He was always respectful, an
even-keel presence and everything he accomplished came within
the frame work of a successful team."
Bremerman was named All-America by both the
National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the Division
II Bulletin. He was also co-player of the year in the GNAC and a
consensus all-region pick.
Bremerman led Seattle Pacific to a share of the
league title and NCAA tournament berth, averaging 18.9 points.
Chris Randolph had won the top GNAC award the
past two years following his NCAA decathlon victories.
Pixler earned four All-American awards, winning
the national indoor mile and outdoor 1500 meters, taking second in
the outdoor 800 and finishing 10th in cross country. Each of her
three teams finished among the top seven in the NCAA. She had
begun her year by playing for the soccer team.
"It couldn't happen to a nicer person,"
said Pixler's running coach, Doris Heritage. "Jessica not
only has the ability, but she also works hard and works smart
for what she's accomplished.
"She loves to run, always gives it her
best effort and does that in class as well. She definitely did
make an impact on her teams, not only directly through her
efforts but also helping teammates to rise up and meet their
goals."
Over the course of the year, Pixler won five
individual and three team GNAC titles in track and cross country.
She set new conference records in the indoor mile and outdoor 800,
1500 and 3000.
Pixler was the GNAC indoor and outdoor track
and field athlete of the year and the West Region track athlete of
the year. Last month she became the first freshman to be voted
Seattle Pacific's athlete of the year.
The Falcons' Danielle Ayers-Stamper (track and
field, 2005), Kerie Hughes (basketball, 2003) and Stephanie
Huffman (track and field, 2002) were previous GNAC all-sports
honorees.
Seattle Pacific won the Great Northwest
Athletic Conference All-Sports championship. Its teams won a total
of eight conference titles and six finished among the top 20 in
the nation.
