A Very Good Year: Seattle Pacific Repeats As GNAC All-Sports Champ

SEATTLE (May 15) ­ Seattle Pacific University, which broke its own record with seven team titles, has claimed the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Sports Team Championship for the second year in a row.

The Falcons edged Western Washington 138-131 with Central Washington (121) taking third.

SPU also won its fourth straight women's all-sports title, finishing 11 points ahead of runner-up Western Washington (92-81). Central Washington won the men's all-sports title, ending Western's five-year run; SPU took fourth.

The Falcons have won the GNAC Academic All-Sports Award for the past three seasons. The 2006-07 winner will be announced this summer.

Seattle Pacific won five of the seven women's titles, finishing first in basketball, cross country, indoor track-and-field, outdoor track-and-field and volleyball. The Falcons also shared the men's basketball and soccer championships.

Seattle University was next with three titles.

Going into the spring, SPU stood at No. 11 in the NACDA Directors' Cup standings for NCAA Division II. The Directors' Cup honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports. Each Div. II institution is awarded points in a combined 14 sports for men and women.

Points are awarded (on a two-point increment) based on the final conference finishes in each of the conference's 14 sports ­ football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's outdoor track & field, baseball and softball.

Final 2006-07 GNAC All-Sports Combined Standings: Seattle Pacific 138, Western Washington 131, Central Washington 121, Western Oregon 102, Seattle 84, Alaska Anchorage 81, Northwest Nazarene 81, Saint Martin's 48, Alaska Fairbanks 36.

Women: Seattle Pacific 92, Western Washington 81, Central Washington 64, Western Oregon 56, Northwest Nazarene 55, Seattle 46, Alaska Anchorage 42, Saint Martin's 24, Alaska Fairbanks 22.

Men: Central Washington 57, Western Washington 50, Western Oregon 46, Seattle Pacific 46, Alaska Anchorage 39, Seattle 38, Northwest Nazarene 26, Saint Martin's 24, Alaska Fairbanks 14.
