Bars presentation

Ashley Domres, 2nd from right, earned Seattle Pacific's highest placement in the USAG individual finals, taking second on bars.

SEATTLE (Apr. 21) ­Christina Ghani capped a golden three days by winning vault and a share of the floor exercise during the individual event finals of the USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Championships, presented by Leisure Care, Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

After winning the all-around title and leading Towson to the team, Ghani kept collecting victories on the final day of the meet. She scored 9.850 on vault and concluded her meet by taking a share of the floor with a 9.875. Ghani, who was also voted the USAG senior athlete of the year, figured in a three-way tie for second on bars with a 9.750.

On bars, Courtney Arno of Texas Woman's earned her second career title with a 9.825. Arno had won last year's crown on beam. The Pioneers Rachel Zimmerman was the beam winner with a 9.8750.

Kari Kucera of Cornell shared the floor crown with Ghani.

Seattle Pacific's Ashley Domres (Jr., Phoenix, Az./ Scottsdale Christian) capitalized on her opportunity to compete on bars by finishing in the second-place tie. Originally an alternate, she replaced injured teammate Debra Huss and scored 9.750.

Sarah Sullivan (Sr., Salem, Or./Sprague) was third on floor (9.850) and fifth on vault (9.6750). Kristin Bryant (Sr., Anchorage, Ak./West Anchorage) landed fourth on vault (9.7125). Brianna Schwartz (So., Bonney Lake, Wa./Sumner) was fifth on bars (9.700) and sixth on floor (9.725). Christie Chinaka (Jr., Honolulu, Hi.) finished sixth on beam (9.7000).

Also presented were the USAG major season awards, with two being claimed by Cornell. Paul Beckwith was voted head coach of the year and Melanie Dillaplane was assistant coach of the year.

The Mari-Rae Sopper Award, which acknowledges an athlete's passion, dedication and devotion to the sport, went to Catherine Schnoes of Texas Woman's.
