SEATTLE (Apr. 19) Host Seattle Pacific University and defending champion Texas Woman's secured their place in the team finals of the USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Championships, presented by Leisure Care, Thursday at Brougham Pavilion.

SPU and TWU will join top-seeded Towson (Md.) and Centenary (La.) in Friday night's contest for the national championship.

The Falcons finished with their third straight score of 193 points or more, at 193.450, to clinch a berth in the finals for the 23rd time in 25 years. Texas Woman's (193.050) held off Cornell (192.625) for the final slot. William & Mary (189.100) was fourth in the session.

Seattle Pacific's Debra Huss (Sr., Orangevale, Ca.) matched her highest all-around sum (38.950) of the season to take first in the session and second overall behind Towson's Christina Ghani (39.025).

Brianna Schwartz (So., Bonney Lake, Wa./Sumner, Wa.) and Sarah Sullivan (Sr., Salem, Or.) gave Huss ample support, taking second and third in the session's all-around with a career-high 38.825 and 38.325, respectively.

Huss clinched Seattle Pacific's place in the finals by winning beam with a 9.825. She also qualified for finals on bars and floor. Kristin Bryant (Sr., Anchorage, Ak./West Anchorage) of SPU won vault (9.875) and Sullivan claimed floor (9.825).

The top five places (with a maximum of three per team) in each event earned berths in Saturday's individual finals.

"Floor is the most difficult event to start on," said SPU Coach Laurel Tindall, "and we were able to get a good start and build momentum off of it."

The Falcons' score ranks No. 5 all-time.

Continued Tindall, "Unfortunately we had the hardest two events to finish on (in bars and beam) and if we can make it to tomorrow, we can definitely improve."

Other finals qualifiers for Seattle Pacific, by virtue of top-five placements, were Schwartz on bars and floor, Sullivan on vault, and Christie Chinaka (Jr. Honolulu, Hi.) on beam.
