WALNUT, Calif. (Apr. 15) In arguably the
best day ever by a Seattle Pacific University sprinter, NyEma Sims
shattered the school record in the 200 meters and achieved the No.
2 all-time mark in the 100 Saturday at the 49th annual Mount SAC
Relays Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Sims (Fr., Portland, Or./Jefferson) erased a
20-year-old mark in the 200, winning her heat in 23.99 seconds.
That was good for eighth overall in the university division. It
broke the standard of 24.31, set by Anita Sartin in 1987.
Earlier, Sims had bolted to fourth place
overall (second in her heat) in the 100 in a time of 11.90
seconds. It ranks second only in SPU history to Shavonne
Colebrooke's 11.79 in 1996.
Both the 100 and 200 times broke Great
Northwest Athletic Conference records set earlier this season by
Sims.
Latasha Essien (Fr., Portland, Or./Reynolds) of
SPU was 20th overall in the 100 and 28th in the 200 with a
season-best times of 12.32 and 25.58, respectively. Those rank
Nos. 6 and 10 all-time in the GNAC.
The Falcons' Teona Perkins (Sr., Kennewick,
Wa.) tied for third in the high jump with a best clearance of 5
feet, 7 inches. Hawaii's Emily Sheppard won at 5-10.
