SEATTLE (Feb. 24) Jackie Hollands scored
16 of her career-high 22 points in the second half, including nine
during a game-breaking run, and Seattle Pacific inched closer to
the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship with a 76-52
victory over Western Washington Saturday night at Brougham
Pavilion.
Hollands (Jr., 5-9, Oregon City, Or.) drained a
three pointer to open the second half as Seattle Pacific (11-3,
18-7) extended a 10-point halftime lead to 13. Western Washington
(9-6, 17-9) responded with six unanswered points to get back to
within seven, but Hollands and the Falcons took the game over and
eliminated the Vikings-one of five teams in contention for the
league title when the night began-from the GNAC playoff picture.
Hollands scored five of the games next
seven points and capped off a 20-4 run with her fifth three
pointer of the night to put SPU on top by 23, 57-34, with 11:31
left to play. Hollands shot 7-for-8 overall, including 5-for-6
from three-point range in matching the teams top individual
scoring performance of the season. She also had five rebounds,
four assists and four steals.
Kelsey Hill (So., 6-2, Portland, Or./Portland
Christian) added 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for her
fifth double-double of the season. Rachel Strand (Sr., 6-0,
Shoreline, Wa./Kings) chipped in nine points and six
rebounds, and Libby Magnusson (Jr., 5-10, White Bear Lake, Mn.)
scored nine points in 28 minutes off the bench.
The Falcons finished with a perfect conference
record at home (8-0) and tallied their 68th victory in the past 70
conference home games.
Willow Cabe led the Vikings with 11 points in a
reserve role as no WWU starters scored in double figures. The
Falcons held the Vikings to just 27.6 percent shooting and their
second-lowest scoring performance of the season.
Claire Pallansch added nine points and eight
rebounds in the loss.
The Falcons shot 62.5 percent and outscored
Western 42-28 in the second half. SPU shot 52 percent overall for
the game, including 53 percent (8-15) from behind the arc. Seattle
Pacific had a 37-32 advantage in rebounding and scored 24 points
off 21 Viking turnovers.
With two games remaining, Seattle Pacific can
capture its fourth GNAC title in the past five years with one more
victory or a loss by Alaska Anchorage. The Seawolves are in action
against Northwest Nazarene tonight in a battle for second place as
both schools try to keep pace with the Falcons.
The Falcons finish the regular season on the
road with GNAC games at Northwest Nazarene (Thursday, March 1) and
Seattle University (Saturday, March 3).
