Echols, Bremerman Help SPU Men Regain First Place in GNAC
February 24, 2007

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Feb. 24) Marques Echols came off the bench for 15 second-half points and Dustin Bremerman scored 18 in his final home appearance as Seattle Pacific University regained sole possession of first place Great Northwest Athletic Conference with an 89-80 win over Alaska Anchorage at Brougham Pavilion Saturday night.

Going into the final week of the regular season, the 25th-ranked Falcons (10-5, 17-9) hold a half-game lead on both Central Washington and Seattle University. Anchorage (9-6, 18-8) fell a full game behind.

Echols (Jr., 6-2, Seattle, Wa./Garfield), Rob Will (Jr., 6-10, Seattle, Wa./O'Dea) and Rob Diederichs (Fr., 6-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) provided much of the offense after Bremerman fueled a late first-half rally to give SPU the lead for good.

Twice Seattle Pacific built an 11-point advantage in the second half, but after the Seawolves pulled to within six with 3:07 remaining, Echols drilled a 23-foot three-pointer with the 4 seconds left on shot clock. On the next possession, Echols drove down court before feeding Will for a layup and an 82-71 lead.

Carl Arts of UAA led all players with 29 points20 in the second halfand Buddy Bailey had 21. Luke Cooper passed for 10 assists and the Seawolves shot 57 percent (25-45).

Six players finished in double figures for SPU, which shot 60 percent from the field (31-52) and made 10 threes.

Echols and Bremerman each had three treys and Bremerman was 9 for 10 from the foul line. After scoring 16 points in the first half he was held scoreless by the Seawolves until the final seconds of the second period.

Bremerman led a charge of 18 unanswered points to reverse the game's momentum late in the first period. He hit a three-pointer and scored the first seven points before Matzen helped put the Falcons into the lead, first firing a 23-foot trey, then following with a steal and layup. Jackson connected from 12 feet and had four points in the spree, which ended with SPU in front, 38-30.

Seattle Pacific struggled early on its Senior Night, going down 11 points midway through the first half. Bailey accounted for all the points in an 8-0 burst which gave the visitors a 27-16 lead.

After being outrebounded by 18 in Thursday's loss to Alaska Fairbanks, the Falcons controlled the boards, 33-19.

Will and Diederichs each scored all of their 10 points after intermission, with Diederichs scoring eight in a row for his team during a 67-second stretch.

SPU, seeking its second straight GNAC crown and third straight trip to the NCAA Division II tournament, concludes the regular season Thursday night at Western Washington.
